“Habit is habit, and not to be flung
out the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time.” Wayne Dyer.
Let’s look at this a different way. Many of us, including
myself, are a little rounder than we would like. Now the weight didn’t appear overnight.
We didn’t go to bed thin and then amazingly gain 30 pounds between dinner and
breakfast. So, we decide to go on a diet. The problem here is the approach, when
we “go” on a diet, there is an expectation of completion, an end. The problem
with this thinking is even if we lose the weight, we go back to old habits of
eating, promising ourselves to eat smaller portions, and soon, magically, the
weight returns. And if we are honest, most of us, I know I did, started many a
diet with the best of intentions but soon fell back into old habits, those
deeply carved patterns of thinking. Why? Because diets are hard; requiring real
long-term change and different thinking patterns, while cheeseburgers are easy,
requiring only fries and maybe a shake. Anyone who has lost weight and kept it
off will tell you it is not about going on a diet but changing the thinking towards our eating habits, embracing a new
path, to realize long term success.
We
choose the path, the instruction sheet we follow, and the choice is always
ours.
Our spiritual development requires the same change in approach,
for though eating healthy is important, a Spiritually nutritious mental diet is
of infinitely more eternal consequence than our waist size. Years of curious
thinking and decisions, false belief and fear driven action will not disappear
overnight any more than that extra 20 pounds we may be lugging around. This
process continues for our lifetime and though our consciousness is eternal,
assembly is required (remember part 1?), so what instruction sheet will you
follow? Choose wisely. Oh, and a piece of cheesecake occasionally, is a good
thing, with some fresh fruit on top of course.
