Morbid reflection typically creeps
into our consciousness with little foreshadowing, truly a wolf in sheep’s
clothing. It starts its sneak attack by slipping in on an unbidden negative memory
or a future fear. We may never know why these seemingly random negative
thoughts surface; perhaps it is a smell, a taste, a song on the radio, a
headline, a blue Volkswagen driving by. In truth "why" matters little
and is in fact a painful trap. What matters is the action we take when we
become aware of discordant or negative thinking: morbid reflection ascendant. Consider the analogy of the campfire:
We are sitting by a campfire and a burning ember floats up and lands on our
sleeve, if we brush it off immediately no real harm is done. However, if we hesitate
for a moment to “think” about why it landed on our sleeve, the shirt will have
a hole in it, with possibly a welt on our arm to mark this “contemplation of
why.”
The metaphysical lesson is simple,
we must remain vigilant for those “burning ember” thoughts and when one sneaks
in, we turn immediately to the Miraculous in prayer to avoid damage. The
wording of our prayer is of course optional, but the timing isn’t. So many make
the mistake of trying to figure out why the thought surfaced, not only failing
to brush off the ember but even nurturing and feeding it fuel by continuing to focus
on the why instead of freedom. Why is
the booby prize. Why only prolongs the pain, intensifies it, while prayer
addresses it, relieves, and removes it.
boo·by prize: n
loser’s prize: a prize given as a joke to the person or team coming last in a competition
If a small fire started in our home we wouldn't stand by watching the fire while toasting marshmallows wondering why it started, we would take swift and prudent action to put it out. Yet many do this very thing in the only dwelling which really matters, their consciousness. When we entertain destructive, negative fear-based thoughts, our serenity and peace of mind burns in the fire of morbid reflection. To be free of morbid reflection we must stay ever vigilant and at the first sign of an ember, we enlist a Power Greater Than Ourselves, as we have come to understand it, to extinguish the ember and restore our peace of mind and heart.
