When we know, who walks beside us, on this path we have chosen, our fears fall from us.

SET ASIDE PRAYER
Consider the passage from the Sermon on the Mount “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”
(Matthew 5:3). We all have known or know those who are “poor spirited”
and blessed usually isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. In fact,
when really considering this passage for the first time it is difficult
not to think of those times when we have felt poor spirited; somewhat
perplexing to the notion that if this is “blessed”, is it such a good thing? The “poor in spirit” The Carpenter refers too has nothing to do
with being poor spirited. Being poor in spirit means we have let go of
our preconceptions and self will. There is a prayer known as the
set-aside or lay-aside prayer that speaks to this state of
consciousness. There are a number of variations, this is one of the
simplest forms: Dear God, please help me to set aside everything I
think I know about you and this world, so I may have an open mind and a
new experience. Please help me to see your Truth, Amen. Surrendering
to win, setting aside our preconceived ideas and sacred cows. If we can
achieve this raised state of consciousness, remaining open minded and
willing to learn, to change and honestly address our defects as well as
our assets of character in their proper light, we would truly be “poor
in spirit” and the kingdom of heaven ours.

BLESSED
"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are
the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do
hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed
are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in
heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they
shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are
persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and
shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice,
and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so
persecuted they the prophets which were before you." (Matthew 5:1-12)
Blessed. All are equal in God’s eyes, what determines our demonstration is practicing the within, without. To believe in the word but fail to live by the word leads to suffering. When I fail to stand for what’s in my heart, the truth as I understand it, I am always reminded later by spiritual discomfort. It typically happens when I am afraid I am going to offend someone or I don’t want to come across as some kind of “Holy Roller.” This discomfort is always self inflicted, God doesn’t do it. So, just for today, by His love and guidance, I will stand for the truth. And those times when I have feet of clay, His love, guidance and unconditional forgiveness will set my feet back on the path, removing my pain, for we are all truly blessed.

THE ORIGINAL SELF HELP GUIDE
You could “Burn all the books, for the answers are all here.” The
books written on how to become a different person, to change, to grow,
to alter ones life could fill a library. The Sermon has been with us for
2000 years, yet how few really study it. Living on the Spiritual Basis
studying this codification leads to the easier softer way, everything
else a variation on its themes. Haven’t read the Sermon in a while? What
a gorgeous day to revisit it.
Matthew 5-7:27 (King James Version)
Matthew 5
1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:
35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Matthew 6
1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Matthew 7
1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
And when He ended, the people were astonished, for He taught as someone having the authority of these words, not merely as a teacher.

And when He ended, the people were astonished, for He taught as someone having the authority of these words, not merely as a teacher.

SURRENDERING TO WIN
Generals draw up battle plans, their
theory on how a battle should be fought and won. Politicians have
theories on everything, usually with little or no actual experience to
balance their opinion. Economists are quick to theorize, usually poorly.
Meteorologists and climatologists put forth theories daily, calling
them forecasts, and we have all experienced their accuracy. Although we
don’t usually think of it in this way, we all have theories about all sorts of things. When we chat about the reasons why something happened,
or didn’t, what we think is going to happen or some action to take, we
are floating theories. Theories based on experience typically have
value, while theories based on no more than wishful thinking are hot air
until implemented, the consequences realized, truth demonstrated. Truth
is never subjective and often stark in its reality. If the local
weather prognosticators get it wrong, the truth is typically no more
painful than a ruined picnic or packing an umbrella on a sunny day. Battle plans which go badly can result not only in
death but in unintended reshaping of borders. Economists theories
should be placed in the newspaper next to horoscopes, unfortunately
decisions affecting everyone are based on their theories, were if a
horoscope is wrong it won’t possibly put thousands of people out of work
or suggest raising taxes. Politicians and the price of demonstration for their
theories? Examples can be found daily on the front page of any paper or
leading the nightly news.
In truth, the world will take care of it’s self, it always has. Man has been trying to bend it to his will forever with little success. So to be free we focus on the only thing that can truly change the world for the better, our spiritual life, our connection to the miraculous. We accomplish this through regular prayer and meditation, we don’t struggle, we pray "with a feather" and approach meditation with joy and excitement. If we find this a problem, we pray on it! A good beginning meditation is contemplating patience, tolerance, kindliness and love in our life and towards the whole planet. If we are concerned about praying in the right way we ask to be shown, in prayer, how to pray correctly, we Keep It Simple. We read every day for a few minutes any book that raises our consciousness and we stop theorizing about truth and practice it, remembering to be as gentle with ourselves as we are with a newborn, surrendering those battle plans, for we have ceased fighting everyone and everything, we have to.

GOOD FOR WHAT AIL's YOU
The path of enlightenment asks us “to turn
our will and our lives over to the care of God’ with the proviso “as we
understand Him.” This phrase is pivotal to the process, so the student
must not take the easy way out. I have heard individuals refer to “God”
as they understand Him as a doorknob, a tree, the ocean or some other
nonsensical thing or object.
Nonsense: n. 1. That which is without good sense; meaningless or ridiculous language. 2. Things of no importance.
To believe that “God” can be anything relegates god to being nothing in reality. “God is either everything or else He is nothing.” What is our choice to be? If you are struggling with the concept of a Power greater than yourself, you can start at a simpler level. To truly set ones feet on the path to living on the Spiritual Basis God must be at least this: Available, Intelligent and Loving and nothing less. Available: to live on the Spiritual Basis requires daily visits with God in prayer and meditation. How is this possible if He is far away, distant? Intelligent: He is the Creator. What more do we need to know? Loving: Here I would ask you to set aside any belief you may have of a vengeful or score keeper God. One of the keys to living on the Spiritual Basis is that “the realm of Heaven is roomy, all inclusive. Never exclusive or forbidding.” That God never brings trouble or sickness to our lives, that He loves us a thousand times more than we love our own children and like you, I love my children a lot. Additionally God doesn’t keep a tally sheet of our lives, We do, everything we have ever done or said is written on our heart, in our hand, our lives an open book to Him who has all knowledge and power; yet since He loves us unconditionally we are forgiven as soon as we ask. If we could only forgive ourselves so readily think how much trouble we could avoid. So, if you are struggling, start at a simpler level and God will heal what AIL’s you.

NO MIDDLE GROUND
God is not just truthful or brings truth but is Absolute Truth itself.
Once we begin living on the Spiritual Basis, God translates from the
relative to the Absolute, He is either everything or else He is nothing,
there remains no middle ground. The coffee shop chats and debates
engaged in before opening our heart to Him lose all significance for now we know, we are either all in or all out. Having made the decision to turn our will
and lives over to the care and direction of God, fear is supplanted by
trust and faith. In the light of Absolute Truth we pause when doubtful
“…and ask for the right thought or action. We constantly remind
ourselves we are no longer running the show, humbly saying to ourselves
many times each day Thy will be done.” To know the truth about any condition heals it, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free” (John 8:32).

ITCHY TEETH
When we express love we express our true essence, God. Think of
how you feel when you express love or when love is expressed to you. In
those moments we are in communion with God, in conscious contact. …God is love; and he that dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him
(1 John 4:16). A bedrock truth of living is a sufficient expression of
love will erase any problem or difficulty. “Where there is fear there
cannot be love. The best way to rid yourself of fear is to realize
divine Love” for “Divine love never fails…” Are not all of our problems
fears based? Are we not driven by the fear that we will either not
receive something we think we need or lose something we have? Isn’t
worry just a five letter word for fear?
The Great Carpenter taught that we cannot serve two masters, so where we place our focus, regardless and sometimes in spite of current circumstances, is the key. Are we focusing on the fear (the world) or on the spiritual (God)? “To realize God as Love is the remedy for fear.” Though word plays typically make my teeth itch, this one has some value: FEAR-False Evidence Appearing Real. God is either everything or else He is nothing, no middle ground, the thoughts we entertain habitually will be expressed in our lives and the choice is always ours. What will we choose to express today, fear or faith? Remember “Where there is fear there cannot be love” that “There is no condition that enough Love will not heal.” By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another (John 13:35).

QUANTUM PHYSICS AND GOD
Over the last few decades science has made amazing strides and
discoveries in the field of Quantum Physics. We have learned that the most minuscule
aspects of matter, the component parts of the
atom, move with intelligence, reacting to the observer, seemingly
existing in two places at once. Now these particles comprise everything, from every star to every grain of sand on this planet and every other. The
chair you are sitting in and the medium you are reading this on. You.
Inside each of us are untold trillions of these particles, all going about
their business without consulting their host, us, at all.
So, if everything is composed of this intelligent matter, remember science tells us so, is this matrix of all creation the mind of God? Gives one pause to wonder, does it not? It has been said that He is closer than hands and feet, that we should look within, not without for our spiritual connection. Looks like they had it right all along. Gotta love science.

ELECTRIC ALAMODE
Consider an apple pie. When you remove a piece, the whole is diminished
by the size of the slice you have decided to enjoy, possibly alamode.
The original apple pie and the slice are composed of exactly the same
ingredients, in the same proportion, only the size different, the slice
merely a smaller representation of the original. Soon others become
aware of your pie experiment and the “whole” pie that began our lesson
is now only represented by a crumb filled pie tin; the original
portioned to the many, probably alamode.
When considering God many think of Him in this way because it is logical. Believing that God is so large He can break off pieces of Himself without concern of ever becoming an empty tin. If this were true however regardless of how small the piece removed, the whole, like our apple pie, is still diminished. But, in truth, God is never diminished, cannot by His nature be diminished. He is as complete and whole today as a year, a thousand, ten thousand or a million years ago. So, if we are not only connected to God but His spark resides within each of us, what is God’s nature?
God is like silence. Cut silence in half and you have more silence. Cut it again, more silence. No matter how many times you try to portion it you only have more, the whole never diminished or changed. The Indwelling Presence is not a “portion” of God, but God himself and proof of our true divine selfhood. Consider an electric circuit. The electricity (God) is present throughout the circuit (us) but we only “see” it when we flip the switch and the bulb (our Divine Mind) illuminates.
Our physical life is like our pie; each day a little more gone until only the tin remains, no deposit required. Our true self, our soul, the I AM is like silence, never diminished, never proportioned always whole and eternal. We are not human beings in search of the miraculous, a spiritual awakening, we are spiritual beings experiencing the human condition. God, like electricity flows through us, always there, the bill always paid in full, just waiting for us to flip the switch and embrace enlightenment.

ENJOYING THE RIDE WITH KWAI CHANG CAIN
Herbert Spencer said that substance is “that which is not subject to
discord or decay”, that Spirit is substance, that Spirit cannot die and
was never born, and that we are Spirit. Consider Buddhism, it teaches
that what we see is illusion, impermanent, that Everything is Zen. If
you have ever read or heard that, it probably didn’t really register as
anything particularly useful. When I first heard this years ago I had the
mental picture of a young Kwai Chang Cain listening to his Master, that
puzzled look on his face not understanding. Unlike Cain however I don't have the luxury of jump cutting where all is revealed. Years and a lot of living (i.e.
pain) were required before I found the Spiritual Basis for Living which has
provided the answers. To borrow from Chuck Chamberlain, now I have A New Pair of Glasses to view life with. Today, I know in my heart of hearts that I AM Spirit, eternal and that only the distorted vision resulting from my human limitations drives my fears and difficulties. That I AM
here to learn as long as this flesh lasts and when it eventually fails,
to take the lessons learned to the next destination wherever that may
be, always moving forward in love and light. So struggle is pointless,
everything really is Zen (God) and since no one gets out alive, we might
as well enjoy the ride.

YOUR PRINCIPLES
Everyone lives by a set of principles, few however take the time to consider
the principles that they practice in their lives, yet we demonstrate
what we believe everyday by our actions. If you were to inventory your
principles, what would be on the list? Do you spend your time rehashing
past events? Telling the same stories of hurt, missed opportunities,
lost love and perceived injustice? Are you quick to correct anyone in
earshot if they happen to be in “error” as you see it? Do you hold
strong opinions on issues, ready to engage in verbal combat at the drop
of an allusion, yet never bother to read or reflect on opposing views?
Do you criticize and/or critique everyone and everything that crosses
your path?
No one but you will see your inventory, so be honest. Some of the principles outlined above include but are certainly not limited to: contempt prior to investigation, morbid reflection, biased judgment, closed mindedness, grandiosity and emotional overcompensation. Of course the list can be added to, but I think you get the picture. Conversely Living on the Spiritual Basis suggests these living principles: patience, tolerance, kindness, love, serenity, benefit of the doubt, open-mindedness, ready acceptance and living in the here and now among others.
It is not a matter of controlling ones thoughts, for trying to control our thoughts is like herding cats, not possible. What we are charged with is how we respond when a negative or discordant thought or action enters our awareness. When we find ourselves practicing negative or destructive principles we immediately turn to God and shine the truth of our divine heritage and His love upon them, thus placing them in their correct light. Remember, our actions and words are always an indicator of our thoughts.
We cannot learn or demonstrate beyond where we are. A first year medical student would never be asked to perform heart surgery or the private to lead the army into battle. Always be gentle with yourself and place your reliance on God, turning to Him in scientific prayer for inspiration and guidance in all things, the only requirement for continued growth is to stay willing and open-minded.

It works, it really does. Try it.
“Study and research are well in their own time and place, but no
amount of either will get you out of a concrete difficulty. Nothing but
practical work in your own consciousness will do that.” (This next part
is paramount since we probably are all guilty.) “The mistake made by
many people, when things go wrong, is to skim through book after book,
without getting anywhere” or talk about it, running it by anyone that will listen but not doing anything about it (Intention versus action).
"Faith without works is dead". Fervent belief is fine as far as it goes, but nothing happens until action is engaged in. Until we demonstrate a consistent course of action nothing of consequence transpires in our consciousness to bring us to the desired safe harbor. We paddle in one direction for a time, then something catches our attention and we set off in another. Is it any wonder then that we never reach safety? Look to your book shelf, how many books are on it that when first read seemed to have the “answer”, yet there they sit, gathering dust. To be fair, they probably are fine works written by wonderful teachers, yet for one reason or another they did not carry the weight to elicit continual study and implementation.
Practical work in our own consciousness requires dedication and consistent effort. “Scientific prayer is the Golden Key to harmony and happiness.” What is scientific prayer? When faced with a difficulty of any kind, we turn in prayer affirming everything we know to be true about God, but under no circumstance do we pray about the problem or difficulty! Instead we turn, in prayer, to focus our whole consciousness on God and our relationship with Him, for God is omnipotent, He already knows everything about our life, our problems, desires, hopes and fears and exactly what is needed. Our job is to get out of the way and trust in Him who has all knowledge and power, to stop focusing on the negative (the difficulty) and place our focus singularly on God (the solution). “Simple, but not easy.”

LONG WAY ROUND
Spiritual teachers suggest that we “think from the end” when confronted with
life’s challenges. Having embarked on the path of Living on the
Spiritual Basis, we now know that at the “end” the solution for every
difficulty or problem is God. We can turn to God at any point along the
way, but the sooner the better. Think of it this way; wherever you
travel there is the shortest, most direct route; any other path is
taking the long way round. Sometimes when traveling the long way round
is preferable, better scenery, more interesting sights, friends along
the way, etc. When suffering however this is never the case yet
it is exactly what most people do! They dawdle along rehashing and retelling their
story with anyone who will listen, engaging in angry recrimination
while wallowing in morbid reflection. Only when we place our feet
squarely on the path, raising our consciousness through prayer and meditation, resisting the temptation to outline the
solution, seeking only the knowledge of His will for us and the power to
carry that out do we triumph. God can and will solve all our problems
and difficulties, if we will rely upon Him. Therefore, when troubled,
take the road less traveled turning to God immediately in prayer and meditation. Avoid the
“the long way round” of resentment, suffering, blame and morbid
reflection but remember, if you find yourself on the wrong road, the turnoff is just a prayer away.

WHAT'S IN YOUR CUP?
When trouble or difficulty arrives at your door, immediately turn
to God in prayer. Pray for the knowledge, guidance and strength to
address the problem and most importantly pray for any other individuals involved,
regardless of how they may have or are attempting to harm. In so
doing we raise our consciousness, building a bull work of peace and
serenity, remaining free and unharmed in spirit. Never, under any pretense ask God
to do harm or cause ill to befall anyone, for if we do we drag our
consciousness down and needlessly subject ourselves to suffering. Seek
always the higher ground of raised consciousness, for each reaps as they
sow and if we sow seeds of hate, anger, resentment and contempt do not
then be surprised when the meal served is comprised of these ingredients. It is the unwise man indeed who pours a cup of poison, drinks from it and then expects those he hates to suffer.

DOES A WATCHED POT BOIL?
Has someone said to you or have you ever said “don’t think like that?”
Not possible is it. It is one of those silly things we say to one
another without having thought it through. Like “a watched pot never boils”, yes it does, every single time and without the origin understood for context it is just nonsense. As
soon as we are told not to think about something the first thing we do
is think about it. No? OK, don’t think about oranges.... How did you do? We
are powerless over the thoughts that float through our minds eye;
however we choose the action upon becoming aware of these
thoughts. Oranges are not much of a problem, but there exists in all of
us a voice of discord and negativity embedded in the
subconscious that is constantly looking for a reason to be upset or outraged. The origin of the voice is secondary, the action we choose
to take paramount. Having embarked on Living on the Spiritual Basis the action is to turn from the lower to the higher by way of prayer and meditation.
If a negative thought is persistent engage in some distracting activity such as a phone call to a friend inquiring about them (do not speak of the negative thought), an engrossing book, exercise, etc. If possible find a way to be of service. Nothing relieves us of the bondage of self, and all negative thinking binds us in self, as intensive work with others. The key is to substitute positive thinking and action for the negative thoughts. Simple but not easy, when we begin this way of living it will feel clunky and somewhat uncomfortable, but just like learning to ride a bike, as long as we are diligent and consistent, in time it will become second nature.

WHAT DOES YOUR FACE SAY?
Though many remain in denial of this truth, there are rules, or laws
if you prefer, that govern our thinking, applying equally to everyone at
all times. They are impersonal, always in force and cannot be appealed.
Being impersonal “This law is true for both good and bad ideas. This
law, when used negatively, brings sickness, trouble, and failure; and
when used positively, brings healing, freedom, and success. We give the
orders-the subconscious does the work.”
We cannot, do not control the thoughts that enter our consciousness. We do control what path to follow when we become aware. When a negative or fearful thought floats up from our subconscious how we respond to it determines our future. We train ourselves when confronted by these discordant thoughts to turn immediately to thoughts of God: His Love, His Power and His Guidance. In so doing the Law of Subconscious Activity works for us, not against.
Practical demonstrations always carry more weight than mere words. Begin by observing the faces of the people in your life. What do you see in the countenance of those who engage in gossip, hurtful or negative words and action? Compare them with those who are consistently kind, supportive and positive. The truth of this lesson will be as plain as the look on your face.

DEMONSTRATING WHERE WE ARE
“Life is like playing a violin concerto naked, and learning to play as
you go along.” A while back I attended a “concert” by second graders,
fully clothed. They were less than perfect in their performance but
performed exactly as second graders should. Had they been High School
students their instructor’s competence would have been questioned and
rightfully so. We would never expect a group of seven year olds to
perform at the level of students more than twice their age. The point
being we always demonstrate where we are. Spiritually where are you?
What principles do you practice, since whether you are aware of them or
not, we all practice principles. Having placed our feet on the path,
choosing to Live on the Spiritual Basis, we embarked on the examined
life. We choose whether to turn to God or revel in morbid reflection
when (not if) negative or fearful thoughts come into our consciousness,
the notes from our violin sweet, clothed in serenity when we Practice
the Presence of God in all our affairs, rejecting the negative.

LAW OF FORGIVENESS
The true key to individual freedom is forgiveness. The reason for
this is simple: “You do this, not for the other person’s sake, but for
your own sake.” Can you think of a single spiritual teacher that has not
made this point? Without forgiveness no real spiritual progress can
ever be made. When we fail to embrace forgiveness we lock ourselves into
a circular route that inevitably leads back to the same difficulties
clothed in different garb, again and again. Applying the same solutions,
we reap the same results, and then thinking we have mastered the lesson
move on, only to be confronted again in short order by the same
difficulties in a new guise. Living on the Spiritual Basis
requires forgiving not only in word and in our actions, but in our
heart.
By recognizing our part and then becoming willing to amend our behavior, apologizing to those requiring apology (all require prayer but not all require an apology) we set our feet squarely on the path. The problem is that some people and incidents continue to crop up in our consciousness even though they have been treated with prayer. The problem arises because we hold onto a kernel of seemingly justified anger that blocks us effectively as a dam blocks a river from experiencing peace. When we hold onto an old hurt, justifying our action for any reason, we stand outside the sunlight of the Presence of God, placing ourselves in the shadow of resentment and fear. By embracing justified anger our thinking becomes stale, stagnant and unhealthy, by throwing open our heart to forgiveness we are rejuvenated, spiritually refreshed. The course here is clear; when these items appear in our consciousness immediately treat them again with prayer and ask to be shown if there is anything we can do to be of service to those just prayed for. By becoming willing to be of service to those who harmed us sets us free. To be very clear, by demonstrating your willingness you are set free, God will never place you in a position to be harmed if you are about His business, so even if we have been hurt terribly, today nothing is more important than our freedom, freedom from them and the power they still exert in our lives. By taking the contrary action to what the World and our carnal mind would have us do, we raise our consciousness and stand in the sunlight of the Spirit, clean, rejuvenated and free, the law of forgiveness manifest.

KNOWLEDGE AND FEELING
“Every thought is made up of two factors, knowledge and feeling.”
What do you believe? We all believe in all sorts of things. Ford is
better than Chevy, Yankees are better than the Red Sox; my grandkids are
cuter than yours are all examples of thoughts/opinions based heavily in
feeling rather than knowledge, except the one about my grandkids of
course. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line,
Hawaii is an island, two plus two equals four are all examples of
knowledge with little feeling/passion attached. Heated discussions have
and will take place concerning the former, yet possibly never concerning
the latter.
What do you believe and why do you believe it? Few take the time to truly get to the roots of the things they believe, especially when there is a great deal of feeling attached to them. In many areas of life this carries minimal consequence, but spiritually it is deadly. When belief in God is based mostly in the mind, intellectual belief, with little passion or heart, life’s difficulties approached clinically, when they fail to demonstrate spiritually it is because of the vagaries of living, never because of a lack of any real faith. Conversely if their belief is based almost exclusively in feeling; especially when holding that they are right and everyone else is wrong, they blindly follow anyone who has a little charisma who parrots their feelings of exclusivity, often with tragic results.
Clearly without passion nothing happens. Living on the Spiritual Basis is a passionate way of life, tempered with truth. Not someone else’s truth but our truth arrived at by scientific prayer and meditation. Read with your eyes but study with your heart. Listen with your ears but hear with the Divine Presence within. Do not mortgage your future on any one teacher or interpretation. Jesus taught that we are all connected to the Father, not requiring any intermediaries to establish this bond since it is ours by right of birth, a teaching that turned the world on its head, and forgotten by many religions. Read spiritual books and study teachers that strike a cord in you, but keep your own counsel in the “secret” place in your heart. When questions arise seek out those who have touched you and consider their words in meditation and if you find their counsel just, incorporate it in your life. The right answers will come if our own house is in order, which requires us to remain willing and open to all spiritual experience, “for the realm of Heaven is roomy, all inclusive, never exclusive or forbidding.”

A LAW OF THOUGHT
What you think upon grows. What we dwell on will be
out pictured in our lives. Period. When we dwell on lack, perceived
injustice (real and imagined), resentment or any of the other hundred
forms of fear clamoring for our attention, it attaches them to our
consciousness as surely as a barnacle to a pier piling. Though no one
would say they wish to suffer, to believe we can think one way and then
receive the opposite is the root of the trouble.
It would be a poor law indeed if it did not work in the reverse as well. When we dwell on the positive, on the Presence of God, on the truth of our relationship with the Divine, that all fear and negativity is false, God the giver of every good gift will then be out pictured in our lives.
Remember the lesson of the camels nose and the tent? Camels lack a reverse gear so if a camel gets its head under the tent flap they are coming all the way in. However if you smack their nose as soon as it appears they will withdraw for no one wants a camel in their tent, they are bad mannered and rather smelly.
Our troubles are just like the camels nose. As soon as we become aware of trouble or difficulty we smack it on the nose with prayer and meditation and its ability to drive us to despair, fear and morbid reflection will be short circuited. What you think upon grows. What will you think upon today? Beware camels.

The Only Instrument Sharp Enough
How we perceive the world colors everything we see and believe. Our
perceptions are built, layer upon layer by our life experiences and how
we interpret those experiences.
Consider:
A homeless person asks for assistance, do you:
1) Act as if they were invisible.
2) Ask them what they need the money for, we will consider it if they can convince us it is for food and not anything we find objectionable.
3) Smile and hand them a few dollars, saying a silent prayer for them since they are a child of God, just as we are.
When I wore a younger mans clothes, not just the homeless, but much of life was invisible to me. Being infallible as only the young can be, why would I consider another’s plight when the universe revolved around me. In time, becoming a husband and parent my vision and perceptions began to change, priorities altered. I could see those struggling, but felt duty bound to lecture and inform those poor unfortunates, because they clearly needed the benefit of my wonderfulness.
“The only instrument sharp enough to cut away the excess of self, is pain.”
The slicing away of self can be a tedious process, but is spiritually invaluable. Today I see with my heart, all are children of a loving God, all equal in His eyes, regardless of station or circumstances. How I treat the least of us will be meted out to me in kind, for we all reap as we sow. Today to the above quote I would add “The only instrument sharp enough to cut away the excess of self and alter our perceptions, is pain.”

DAY 7 OF THE 7 DAY MENTAL DIET
Congratulations. You made it. Today continue employing that smile and take a few minutes in quiet contemplation to review what you learned/discovered about yourself the last few days. Moving forward anytime you feel a little spiritual boot camp is in order, revisit this simple plan and gently, always gently, reapply its principles. Now you can share your experience with anyone you believe would profit from it.
The diet has put you in touch with the Primal Power of
Being. This power is what changes us. It is the motive force behind everything.
It is no less than our connection, at the most basic and profound level, to the
creative life force that permeates everything and everyone. That
power is God.
“Speak to Him, thou, for He hears, and Spirit with Spirit can
meet--
Closer is He than breathing, and nearer than hands and
feet.” Tennyson

DAY 6 OF THE 7 DAY MENTAL DIET
Hang in there, only 1 more day to go. Then again, you may be experiencing such profound changes in your outlook that you desire more. Today’s teaching is on love and its power, its ability to change us at the core and the unique availability of love. Love is always available, if we are willing to take action. Faith without works is dead and just as with faith, love requires action. We must build up “by faithful daily exercise the true Love Consciousness.” This is a key ingredient in our daily diet since “Love and tolerance of others is our code.”
The path of enlightenment requires work, effort on our part. We start our day by “asking each morning in meditation that our creator show us the way of patience, tolerance, kindliness and love.” Do you start your day with meditation? No? Why not? Would you try to make a cake without flour? Drive your car missing a tire? Of course not. Meditation is an integral part of living on the Spiritual Basis. If you are not meditating daily, start at a simple level. Find a quiet place where you will be undisturbed for a few minutes. Take 2 or 3 deep breaths slowly exhaling through the nose. With eyes closed, consider what patience, tolerance, kindliness and love mean to you. Your mind will begin to visualize, do not fight it or try to control it. In your minds dialogue stay focused on the task at hand. When your mind wanders gently bring it back. When it wanders again end your session and thank God for knowing Him better. What could be easier? Limit your sessions to 10 to 15 minutes. This is sufficient to start the day and we can all find this amount of time if we are willing. Of course if you have the time and are moved to longer sessions, then do.

DAY 5 OF THE 7 DAY MENTAL DIET
…God is love; and he that dwells in love dwells in
God, and God in him (1 John 4:16). Today, attempt to greet everyone, and
view everything through the prism of love. This begins by greeting all with a
smile. You will not do this perfectly, no one but a saint could, the purpose is
to be aware of love, experience the truly limitless capacity we have for it, to
both give and receive. Observe how those whom you meet respond when you greet
them with love and how your thoughts are altered when a situation or a bit of
news is viewed through the prism of love. The path of love is the straight
gate and the shortest way to the great Goal, to live on the Spiritual Basis
one day at a time for eternity. Oh, and you are keeping this to yourself for
the next couple of days, right?

DAY 4 OF THE 7 DAY MENTAL DIET
Consider: “A man is sitting by a camp fire when a red hot cinder flies up and falls on his sleeve. If he blows that cinder off at once, without a moment’s delay to consider it, no harm is done. However, if he allows it to rest for even a single moment, under any pretense, the mischief is done, and it will be a troublesome task to repair the sleeve. So it is with negative thought.” Simply stated we have no control over the thoughts that surface in our consciousness or are foisted on us by others but we do choose how we will address those thoughts. Living on the Spiritual Basis the path is clear: When we turn immediately to a Power Greater Than Ourselves in prayer as soon as we become aware of the negative, regardless of its source, we remain unharmed, our sleeves hole free. We additionally avoid the trap of morbid reflection set by trying to figure out or understand why a particular thought crossed our mind; we just take the necessary action to address it. In time, this will become second nature.
By this point in the diet you are probably experiencing some difficulties, it may feel like everything is seemingly going sideways, you have more trouble now, more spiritual discontent than when you started the diet. Outstanding! You have shaken your world at its bedrock and when the shaking stops, a new and much stronger foundation will be in place. Stay the course and under no circumstance discuss what you are doing with anyone until you are done with the diet. Onwards through the fog.

DAY 3 OF THE 7 DAY DIET
Day 3: Having
fun yet? The diet may be simple, but it certainly is not easy. Continue your
vigilance, watching for morbid reflection, that negative or destructive
thinking that seems to be always lurking. When you find your thoughts drifting into any of these areas stop
immediately and supplant the negative and destructive with a positive thought
and action where applicable. As you are beginning to discover, this is a
strenuous effort and few would be able to do this for much more than seven days
so take heart, the dividends you will receive are worth the effort. Keep in
focus the reason for this diet: to be aware and to learn to plant only
positive, constructive, optimistic and kind thoughts in the garden of our
consciousness; watered with the love and guidance of the Creative Power of the Universe.
Shhhh…remember don’t tell anyone you are on a diet. Follow this advice as well
if you are considering starting a weight loss plan, an exercise program or
quitting smoking and your odds of success will increase exponentially.

DAY 2 OF SEVEN DAY MENTAL DIET
Day 2 of Diet: If you are still considering whether to attempt this diet, take a moment in quiet contemplation and ask yourself why? What is there to be afraid of? This contemplation alone is worth the price of admission, but always be gentle with yourself, avoiding morbid reflection at all costs.
If you began the diet yesterday, today choose the subjects you will entertain in your consciousness. Measure the emotional tone, being aware at all times of what you are thinking and how it is affecting you. Now for some good news, no one does this perfectly. When you become aware that your thoughts have wandered, and they will, ask yourself quietly why you drifted into that thought and how it affected you emotionally. Often these will just be random thoughts triggered by a scent, a word or phrase or any of the multitudes of sensory inputs we experience daily, so do not give into paralysis by analysis. Remember, often a cloudy day is just a cloudy day, nothing more. If you find that perhaps there is more to it and you cannot take a moment now, briefly note the thought and when you have the time, reflect on it in gentle contemplation. There is a rule here that must be obeyed. The rule is we are never to struggle or engage in negative appraisal of these random thoughts. We simply observe what floats through our mind as dispassionately as we can; this is not an exercise in judging, only in observing and noting affects.

The Seven Day Mental Diet: Day One
THE SEVEN DAY MENTAL DIET
The seven day mental diet is a lesson in reaping and sowing. In the garden of our thoughts, how careful are we with the crops we plant and nurture in our consciousness? One of the fundamental truths of being is the thoughts we entertain will outsource into our lives. Consider: What are you reading? Watching on television? What topics do you consistently chat with friends and family about? What thoughts do you dwell on in private? These things comprise the food we feed our consciousness.
Day One: Be aware of the thoughts you entertain and the “food” you feed your mind. Be conscious in the moment. Keep notes if it helps, no extra points for spelling or correct punctuation.. DO NOT tell anyone that you are on a diet, to do so guarantees failure. If the idea of doing this makes you cringe, than don’t. You are not ready. Just file it away and when ready, this wonderful tool of freedom will be available.

Walmart Don’t Wanna Be’s
I never wanted to shop at Walmart. I wasn’t “opposed” to
Walmart as some of my more enlightened (i.e. liberal) friends were, some even
going as far as placing boycott stickers on their vehicles when Walmart first
came to our berg, positioned with care right next to the regulation Greenpeace,
Save Tibet and Make Love Not War messages.
I looked at Walmart as a necessary thing for those who
“needed” it; those unfortunate financially challenged souls who needed
ubiquitous cut rate pricing on everything.
That first time I ventured in it felt like that first day
back in High School trying to find my locker. People were pushing around carts
filled with groceries, clothes, shoes, ammunition and Hello Kitty dolls. I
nearly went catatonic. You don’t put those things in the same cart; it is not
done! It is like having Amy Grant and TSOL in rotation on the ipod or listening
to Rush Limbaugh at the DNC. Shoes are purchased at a shoe store and clothes at
places that do not have frozen food aisles for God’s sake!
I was in shock, my decades long notions of purchasing
etiquette were being assaulted at the most basic sacrosanct levels but then I
began noticing the pricing. Slowly my vision cleared, my roiling stomach
forgotten, the reality of a full cart versus a couple of puny bags became
evident as I began to make my way around. Pet food next to truck tires, frozen
food across the aisle from casual women’s wear, packaged goods merged into pots
and pans than watches to electronics and back to vegetables. I was in a
whirlwind of pricing, 50” plasma TV’s for how much? My finicky cat’s favorite
food half the price I had been paying, affordable vitamins and supplements? I
was hooked.
Soon I lost my fear of being seen by someone I knew, for
just like bumping into them in traffic court you are both there for the same
reason. In time I began smiling at my fellow Walmart travelers, and though most
keep their heads down avoiding eye contact I don’t mind. I now drive an older
Toyota with fading paint, the BMW long gone. Today the tires are pretty good
but I did drive around for 6 months on dangerously worn ones lacking the money
for replacements. It’s been a few weeks but I still have a wave of peace roll
over me when I see those tires, who knew a little rubber could be connected to
serenity?
Now that I am a Walmart veteran, the newbies are cute to
watch, their furtive glances and uncomfortable body language very familiar. My
decision initially to shop at Walmart was made out of simple economic
necessity, I could continue shopping at my upscale local grocer and do without
or switch to the much-maligned Walmart and stretch my purchasing power. The
life lesson though was unexpected. Believing I was this open-minded, freethinking,
enlightened non-judgmental caring individual when I was forced by economics to
adjust my lifestyle some uncomfortable personal truths became evident. My world view had been arrogant and condescending though I would have argued the
point vociferously with anyone who would have suggested it at the time. But
there it was. We only know what we know when we know it. Our perceptions
colored and limited by what we choose to read/watch/listen to but even
more directly by those whom we habitually associate with and the circles we
travel in.
Being in the third act of my life I am at a place I thought
I would never be financially. Life’s lessons do not come neatly packaged devoid
of emotion, both positive and negative. A wise man said to me years ago “ pain
is the only instrument sharp enough to cut away the excess of self.” So if we pass in the frozen food/sporting
goods aisle I will smile and leave it up to you to strike up a conversation and
if I think you are ready I will tell you about the discount grocery I’m
grateful I found on the other side of the tracks that makes Walmart look
absolutely Beverly Hills. Onwards through the fog.

Certain teachings rise to the level of “sell all the books, everything needed is here.” Emmet Fox provides one of those with: The Captain Is On The Bridge
(Around The Year With Emmet Fox pg. 248) for dealing with fear.
Consider, when he said this America was gripped by the Great Depression,
prohibition creating a whole new class of criminal, millions displaced
from America’s dust choked heartland, the drums of war beating with
Hitler’s rise to power in the east and Japan's in the west. Yet Dr Fox confidently stated that The Captain Is On The Bridge:
“The world is not going to the dogs. The human race is not doomed. Civilization is not going to crash. The captain is on the bridge. Humanity is going through a difficult time, but humanity has gone through difficulties many times before in its long history, and has always come through, strengthened and purified.
Do not worry yourself about the universe collapsing. It is not going to collapse, and anyway that question is none of your business. The captain is on the bridge. If the survival of humanity depended upon you or me, it would be a poor look out for the Great Enterprise, would it not?
The captain is on the bridge. God is still in business. All that you have to do is to realize the Presence of God where trouble seems to be, to do your nearest duty to the very best of your ability; and to keep an even mind until the storm is over.”
God doesn't need my help in running the Universe, let alone my life, but I certainly need His. Fortunately, The Captain Is (still) On The Bridge.

Day One: Be aware of the thoughts you entertain and the “food” you feed your mind. Be conscious in the moment. Keep notes if it helps, no extra points for spelling or correct punctuation. DO NOT tell anyone that you are on a diet, to do so guarantees failure. If the idea of doing this makes you cringe, than don’t. You are not ready. Just file it away and when ready, this wonderful tool of freedom will be available.

Improving the World
“Bless a thing and it will bless you. Curse it and it will curse you.” Regardless of circumstances, to be free we must bless anyone or anything that is causing us difficulty. If we harbor any seemingly righteous or justified anger, we ask in prayer for the willingness to see the truth. Hate and resentment is never overcome with more hate and resentment, when we harbor these things in our heart the object of our ire suffers not; we sip the cup of discontent and pain and reap its effects. All reap as they sow and by blessing that which is unlovely and objectionable not only sets us free, the world improves as well.

The Hardest Thing
Possibly the hardest spiritual direction of all is “to be still.” We have done all the indicated work regarding a difficulty or trouble confronting us. The prayers have been said. Forgiveness asked for and freely given. Meditations on receiving strength and direction accomplished. Now what? “Be still, and know that I am God” “Wait on the Lord: be of courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait I say, on the Lord.” What an order. As someone new to the path said to me years ago in all seriousness: “I need patience and I need it right now.” As my laughter subsided the thought crossed my mind, me too.
Flea Markets and Construction
Our consciousness is unsullied at birth; we are born pure in spirit, our Divine connection immaculate. But as we age and mature, our consciousness becomes layered with false beliefs in limitation, sin, sickness and all discord, obscuring our original perfection. Just as the lucky flea market shopper who stumbles across a life changing treasure hidden under layers of dirt and grime, we rediscover the Higher Truth we are born with. As we peel back the layers, employing meditation and prayer to scrape away bit-by-bit the fear, limitation, selfishness and unrighteous judgment that the world and our carnal pursuits have bound us with, our true self begins to shine through. Often it feels as if this is a task beyond us, the needed power lacking, which in fact, it is. Fortunately the innate connection we are uncovering and discovering again for the first time is power personified. By taping into this power greater than ourselves we receive not only the direction and guidance but also the needed strength to walk our path of enlightenment and awakening.
It is easy to become overwhelmed by this undertaking, but the good news is we only need to accomplish what can be done in a day. The story is told of the mason working on an intricate tile floor in a cathedral. A visitor marveled at the work that had been done but was overwhelmed by the immensity of the area left to be tiled. When the mason was asked how he could do it, he replied, “I know about how much I can do in a day, so I mark out that much and don’t concern myself with the rest.” We employ prayer and meditation in the same way, addressing what is before us this day, leaving the morrow to care for itself.

A LITTLE THING
Ever tell a “fish” story? You know, the one that adds a few inches to or the number of fish caught. It can happen when we are talking about anything really, job, investments, kids, grandkids, accomplishments or our prowess in our “glory” days, etc. Usually the embellishment is small in nature and if we stretch logic, (kinda like stepping on that fish to make it legal) we sell it to ourselves all the while knowing in our heart of hearts that we are being a little less than truthful. We couch it in “it is no big deal, everybody does it” so we let it pass. The most troubling part is that it is truly a pointless exercise, for who are we trying to impress with this piddling deception, friends, acquaintances or even just someone newly met? How about God? Really? He knows the truth. Ourselves? We know the truth as well. On the cosmic scale these are small offenses but troubling nonetheless. Though not really a big deal in the over all scheme of enlightenment, they still make us cringe when one sneaks out due to inattention. Remember, the only thing we can do perfectly is to remain willing to grow and change. So just for today, be diligent and if one does sneak out stop and clear it up immediately and you will find after having followed this course of action a few times, your attention will be surprisingly sharpened.

Tanker Truck or Thimble?
“When you pray you are turning to the power of God and surely you will admit that God is omnipotent, and therefore nothing can be too difficult, or too late, or too soon for Him.” “Infinite Wisdom knows a beautiful and joyous solution to any dilemma. Do not limit the power of God for good in your life.” God is never limited, only OUR perception is limited. God is the true and only source, His abundance beyond measure, a sea of infinite size. Standing at the shore of spiritual abundance, how big is the vessel you brought to fill? A thimble? A cup? A bucket? A tanker truck? The size of our vessel is determined by limits we impose. He wants us to partake fully for we are His children and in truth His abundance is our abundance, our limitations constructed out of self-centered fear. A limited thimble or a limitless queue of tanker trucks, the choice, as always, is ours.

WT?G
“It is not when things are going well that we make our progress. It is not even when things are going wrong and yet we feel sure that we can handle them with prayer, that we advance. It is when, smitten by the temptation to discouragement or even despair, we yet stand for what we know is the Truth.” A wise man said to me years ago “there will be days when in pain, seemingly at wits end when you are going to look around and exclaim WHAT THE ? GOD! (Since this man was a Marine, I will leave it to you gentle reader to decipher ?) Having worked diligently, doing all that is indicated and yet life has gone sideways. Prayers seem to be falling on deaf ears and meditation has lost its savor. Negative analysis leads inexorably to wallowing in morbid reflection. Everything is turning from light to dark. Then the deadly thought surfaces: What’s the point? We placed our trust in God and He has seemingly abandoned us at the worst possible moment. We have lost perspective. The reality that we are eternal, that this is just one day in a very long existence, that we are living in eternity has drifted from focus. Dwelling on the false belief that this time nothing will change, the dark only becoming darker, we feel adrift, alone and unloved. Perhaps even so far as to entertain doubts about even the existence of God and all the destructive thinking this path leads to.
We begin our trip back from the brink with the simple recitation of possibly the most powerful prayer of all: Be still and know that I am God. And wait. What an order. The times when the only action is non-action, allowing God to work are the hardest. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord. (Psalm 27:14) Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him (Job 13:15). We must hold to the truth that God is either everything or else he is nothing. He either is or isn’t, no middle ground, no areas of gray. So when our perspective drifts and negative analysis tries to rule the day we must lean even harder on Him who loves us unconditionally, who has all knowledge and power and it begins with: Be still and know that I am God. And wait. Simple, but not easy, how is that for understatement. Peace.

No One Left Behind
Living on the Spiritual Basis our points of reference, the things that used to interest us alters. Typically, this happens with little or no thought on our part. Consider: As children we never sat down one day and decided it was time to stop playing Tonka toys, dolls, army or dress up. The last time we played hide and seek as children just happened. We didn’t plan it or think it through we just didn’t play again. If we take a moment in contemplation, many things can be found that we just stopped doing, without any thought or consideration on our part. Call it growing up or maturing, the same thing happens spiritually but with an important difference: everyone ages and leaves behind their childhood; spiritual growth requires effort on our part. Once we have chosen to place our feet on the path of enlightenment, consistency in action is required. If we are consistent things like gossip, character assassination, selfish and self-centeredness melt away for we are translating from the carnal to the spiritual in thought and deed. This has happened without a conscious plan on our part or by “working” on ourselves but by demonstrating the higher consciousness by our actions. Just as our interest turned from hide and seek in course so does our interest in the spiritually retarding.
“Until you find your true place in life, however, you will never be really happy, no matter how much money or distinction you may acquire; and until you are happy, you will be neither healthy nor free.”
Our true place, all of ours, is to stand in the light of God’s love, guidance, tolerance and peace. By treating all we meet along the path of our lives in the manner we wish to be treated in, the world changes. When we salute the innate spark of the Divine in all, regardless of how disagreeable we may find them, the world improves. Love cannot grow in hate. Peace cannot be found in a raised hand. Meeting of minds never comes from a bullhorn. Condescension never gives rise to understanding. The path has been clear for two thousand years, has not enough time, enough failed demonstrations of personal and collective selfishness shown the futility of business as usual? Pray for humanity to put aside its toys and childish ways and embrace our true place, as children of peace, kindness and joy united in Spirit, no one beyond the pale, no one left behind.

BLOODY KNEES, BACTINE, MONKEY BARS AND GOD
Recently the world changed, well recent in a generational sense. It has happened over the last 60 years. Once upon a time children were taught to strive to be the best, to excel, to play hard, keep score and that bumps and scrapes and bruises and winning and losing were all part of growing up and life. When they burst through the door with a bloody knee or elbow, they received a spray of Bactine, a band-aid, and a pat on the butt and were sent back out to play. If Johnny who lived down the street bloodied their nose, Dad would give them a pep talk and a boxing lesson. If they broke the rules at school a swat from “old hickory” or some such named paddle was delivered, picking up trash or some other supposed demeaning task assigned to punctuate their malfeasance, parents notified only if they were repeat offenders.
Today a bloody knee, elbow, or nose can lead to a trip to the plastic surgeon and an immediate call to an attorney to assign blame and seek compensation for emotional tumult and future therapy needs, fighting requiring a police report and a crisis counselor. Have you been to a playground lately? No swings, no “monkey” bars to do “death drops” from, no jungle gyms or teeter-totters, grass and dirt replaced with specially formulated cushioning sand and rubber mats. Failure is avoided in our public schools, it being more important to “try” than succeed. Even scores for sporting contests have been discontinued in some burbs because it is more important to participate than to have winners and losers, God forbid. Oops, sorry, using the G word or saying “Merry Christmas” may upset or offend someone so that is frowned on and do not even suggest singing any of the great Christmas carols like Silent Night in a public setting, too religious dontcha know. Oh, and don’t even get them started on “In God We Trust” on American currency.
If you agree with way the world is turning in regards to personal responsibility, wrapping children in “cotton” in a attempt to shield them from life’s inevitable ups, downs, bruises, cuts, failures and successes, the removing of God and Spiritual Guidance from being mentioned in any public way, than please, have a wonderful day and stop reading. No Really. Stop.
When we believe in nothing then we will believe in anything, all that matters is feelings. Actions have no consequence, so long as I feel good about myself is the credo of those living on the secular basis, a basis for living built on the shifting sand of carnal thought. Living on the Spiritual Basis provides a foundation built on unshakable rock, a foundation that can and will stand against anything thrown against it. God is either everything or else He is nothing-choose wisely. Oh, and whatever time of year it is, Merry Christmas.

THE BEST SERMON
So, just for today, practice patience, tolerance, kindness and love to the best of your current ability, for as a wise man said to me many years ago, don’t sing me a sermon, show me one.

WE CANNOT HAVE BOTH
We cannot have love and practice hatred.
We cannot have serenity and embrace anger.
We cannot have true joy and harbor resentment.
We cannot have peace of heart and a closed mind.
We cannot have peace of mind and engage in gossip.
We cannot have spiritual growth and believe in limitation.
We cannot have spiritual abundance and a hoarding mentality.
We cannot have integrity and engage in character assassination.

WHO IS YOUR HABERDASHER?
So why then are some prayers seemingly not answered? The reason for this is simple: “We often pray for things for which we are not really prepared; but if we pray scientifically this will not matter, since Creative intelligence will send us the thing that we really need” Emmet Fox. So clearly a loving, all powerful, all knowing God provides what we need, the perfect hat, but it is our outlining of what we believe we need or what the answer should look like, a different hat, that causes us difficulty. Consider the parable of the lost man: A man is lost in a frozen wilderness. He prays to God for rescue. As if on queue, a trapper appears and offers to lead the man out. He replies, “Thanks, but I have prayed and God will rescue me,” the trapper, shaking his head continues on his way. Some time passes and a man on a snowmobile drives up and offers the man a ride out. Again he replies “Thanks, but I have prayed and God will rescue me”, stunned, he drives away. As night begins to fall a helicopter appears and the pilot calls out “A hunter and snowmobile rider reported you were stranded out here” begging the man to get on board, for when night falls he will freeze to death. The man however remains steadfast in his belief, so the helicopter pilot reluctantly lifts off, his heart sick for he knows the man‘s fate is sealed. The sun sets and in short order the man finds himself standing before God. Incredulous he asks God “Where were you? I prayed and you never came.” God, in a quiet voice with a tear in his eye responded, “Of course I came. I sent a trapper, a snowmobile and a helicopter to rescue you.”
How often have we already had the right hat (demonstration) in our possession, but were unable to recognize it for we had outlined a different solution. Never fear in prayer, pray deeply and if you are unsure of what hat to wear, let God be your haberdasher and though you may desire a fedora, balmoral or capuchon, don’t dismiss the baseball cap that keeps showing up.

JUST FOR TODAY
Consistent effort and practice is required if we wish to demonstrate spiritually. Mere mental assent has little lasting effect unless coupled with intelligent effort. “Faith without works is dead.” True Change only happens when we put into action what we have learned, moving knowledge, mind, into purpose, heart. So the question stands: Are you following a consistent set of spiritual principles, practicing them religiously? And if not, why not, what could possibly be of more importance?
