When we know, who walks beside us, on this path we have chosen, our fears fall from us.

K.I.R.K.I.S. (Keep It Real Keep It Simple)

We are constantly building up or tearing down our mental structure by the things we ingest: books, magazines, newspapers, social media and conversations of all stripes. Then there is the almost unconscious ingestion via television: sports, news, talk shows, sitcoms, dramas, movies, history and learning, “reality” shows (I always wonder whose “reality” those programs are based on) and of course, infomercials and commercials.

All input affects, colors our thinking and world view. We choose the type of structure, materials and practices that compose and build our consciousness, usually without much thought or discernment on our part. Consider: would we knowingly use defective building materials or stand for shoddy workmanship in our home? Haphazard repairs done to our vehicle or place our life in the hands of a cut-rate doctor? Our consciousness or soul if you prefer, is more precious than any home or vehicle repair or even bodily health, for the structure we dwell in, the car we drive, even our body is a temporary construct, while our consciousness is eternal.

So, beginning today, take a moment and consider your mental diet, but do not rush off willy-nilly making changes or taking vows, we have all done this in the past when “deciding” to lose weight, eat better or begin an exercise regimen and though our motives were sound, we placed unrealistic expectations on ourselves virtually guaranteeing failure. As our awareness grows, we quietly and gently in prayer and meditation ask to be shown what changes and action should be taken, asking God for guidance and the needed power to carry them out. Reborn

Genesis: n

beginning: the time or circumstances of something’s coming into being. (Encarta)

New beginnings. We have had and will have many in our lives: moving out from our parent’s home, going away to school, first job, new job, marriage, divorce, becoming a parent, etc. Though all are remarkable, the greatest of these however is the day we choose to live on a different basis, the basis of trusting and relying on a Power Greater Than Ourselves. This conscious decision to Live on the Spiritual Basis closes the chapters of our lives lived on self-propulsion and self will and opens the new, for we are in fact “reborn”. Our rebirth into the light is brought about in pain, just as our physical birth, made all the more difficult because we are fully conscious for all of it, unfortunately Pain is the only instrument sharp enough to cut away the excess of self. Is it any wonder this path is the road less traveled? Our carnal mind seeks and the secular world offers many “easy” alternatives to address our discomfort, a pill for every ill as well as book purveyor’s shelves and the airways chock full of “easier, softer ways”, all that is required is a few silver coins. Many pay the path lip service, few willing to pay the price required, a great sadness indeed. Pain is the touchstone of spiritual growth, we can wish it were not so with all our might, but in truth, without pain few, if any, would be moved to act, complacency one of the Adversaries sharpest tools.

The Good News however is that once moved to act, we tap into the power of the miraculous, taking a partner in living who has all knowledge and power, the Source of all. The promise is that once we have embarked on this new beginning, if we remain willing and refuse to be turned by the Adversary, fear, life will take on new meaning. We will comprehend Serenity and we will know peace, no matter what our current circumstances. We are, in fact, reborn.

Hypocrisy And Forrest Gump

“Handsome is as handsome does.” Sounds a bit Forrest Gump-ish but it fit’s the bill. Many wish to enjoy a certain reputation they know in their heart they don’t deserve. The ill-tempered person may indeed wish to be loved and favored but their very actions make it impossible. How often have we heard a friend or acquaintance (or even ourselves) attempt to sell the idea that even though someone is acting or has acted badly they really meant well, are basically nice people, having a heart of gold. Nonsense: Handsome is as handsome does. Living on the Spiritual Basis our serenity is measured by our actions. We must walk the way we talk or risk suffering mightily at the hands of hypocrisy. We can wish to be spiritual, we can wish for peace, we can wish to be happy, joyous and free but unless our actions match up with our wishes, we will never demonstrate our hearts desire.

The Heart Of The Process

“We have ceased fighting everyone and everything, for we are on a new basis, the basis of trusting and relying on God.” This principle is at the heart of Living on the Spiritual Basis. To believe that any of us have achieved perfection in this is foolhardy. Our time in this flesh is marked by progress not perfection in our spiritual growth, so we stay ever vigilant, day by day, occasionally moment by moment. We turn to Him who has all knowledge and power for the right words or action when we find ourselves in conflict either with the world or within ourselves, remaining open minded and though perhaps trembling, willing to do His will, not ours, for in this lies the heart of the process of Living on the Spiritual Basis.

The Lion's Den Of Morbid Reflection

Morbid reflection is the act of rehashing and/or rehearsing  the “story”  of some past negative event or occurrence over and over again. When employed this practice takes us out of the moment and transports us back to a time when either we did or said something objectionable or something objectionable was done or said to us. Often it begins in the most nonchalant manner but quickly morphs into feelings of hurt, fear, loss, anger, resentment then graduating into condemnation of ourselves/them or both, finally leaving us depressed, feeling like crap (not the term a psychologist would use, but it does say it all).

When we engage in morbid reflection it is akin to hanging a big steak around our neck and stepping into a lion’s den. Not really surprising then what happens next, yet unless we are vigilant in our minds eye we will find ourselves staring at that drooling lion regularly, wondering how we stumbled into the den again and where the hell did this steak come from. We do not allow morbid reflection to gain even the slightest foothold in our thinking, so when we become aware of the lion, we immediately turn to God and ask Him to guide our thoughts. If the lion has already got a hold, we keep our prayers simple but insistent: Please God, help me to keep my head where my hands are, thy will be done or the simple yet powerful Be still and know that I am God. Depending on how far the lion has progressed with its meal, we may have to repeat the prayer or prayers numerous times, but considering the ultimate outcome of the meal if we don’t, the price is cheap. So when the lion roars, agree quickly that you are in the den, the only way out being swift and consistent application of spiritual principles.
