Head to heart, from letter to spirit. This journey from one to the other is
the longest 18 inches in the world. When we began questioning life’s orthodoxy;
as we all have done to some degree usually beginning in our teens or early
twenties, we never dreamt where this thread would lead us. As we mature, and
hopefully grow a little wiser, the fire to question unfortunately dims for
many. I suppose that is not all bad, it would be hard to imagine a world full
of middle-aged teenagers where the trains ran on time. Unfortunately maturing
often walks hand in hand with complacency, rolling over us silently like the
fog slipping in on cat’s paws, the passion we once had in our thinking and
lives dimming; the fire often all but extinguished. Having become invested in
the status quo, it becomes easier to go along than to address hard questions. But
answer we must if continued growth is desired. So, here's one:
How do you live today? By letter or spirit?
The world needs certain rules, laws if you prefer, to function but what of the
rules enforced at the cost of the individual? Is it “correct or right” to
refuse help to anyone simply because they don’t meet some often-arbitrary
formula or set of conditions? To consign anyone to suffer, when help is
available, runs contrary to The Law of Being and unfortunately secular society
is often more interested in obeying rules than in seeing the person before them
as a child of God, a true brother or sister, connected one to another in
Spirit, responsible one to another regardless of conditions or circumstance. So
being IN but not OF the world, my prayer is:
just for today God, show me how
I may be of service to you and my fellows and at the very least, let me do no
harm.
Who has also made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter,
but of the spirit: for letter kills, but the spirit gives life (2
Corinthians 3:6)
