What makes us happy? Is it meeting
that “special” someone, our wedding day, our divorce day, birth of a child,
landing “The” job, graduating, watching our child graduate, doing something
nice for somebody and not getting caught? What these forms of happiness all
have in common is just as fresh bread is only fresh for a short time, these feelings
of happiness, though wonderful in the moment, fade, becoming memories.
So, what would provide perpetual happiness, perpetual fresh bread if you will?
Wealth? Good health? Satisfying career? Family? Begs some contemplation don’t
you agree? Money is good, having been both financially flush and broke in my
life, having money is better, but happiness? Some of the most miserable,
unhappy people I have known were financially set, so money by itself clearly
isn’t the answer. Good health is a wonderful thing, but since the passing of the
flesh is inevitable, even good health ultimately is terminal. Careers are
important, but intrinsically suffers the same shortcomings as wealth. And family?
All families go through difficulties, and though we love our children, the
decisions they make maturing, especially when teenagers, often elicit feelings
other than happiness.
If we make happiness contingent on outer things, including people, we will
never truly be happy. In truth, happiness can only be found within. Experience
demonstrates those who have a deep and abiding connection with the Miraculous enjoy
a sense of true happiness at their core. Trouble still comes of course, as
it does for all, but they meet calamity with serenity for they have a conscious
contact with the Creative Power at the heart of all creation; and by prayer,
meditation and service meet all of life’s downs and ups with faith, for only by
faith in demonstration do we receive the guidance and strength which provides
lasting inner peace, paving the way of true happiness. Something to contemplate
while happily savoring freshly baked bread.
